Currently, Children of Uganda supports four main programs in Uganda: the Educational Support Program, the Family Empowerment Program, the Reproductive Health/HIV/AIDS Program and the Information, Education, Communication and Advocacy Program.
Children of Uganda supports two children's homes in Uganda- one located in the Rakai district and the other in the Mukono district. Each home has an attached primary school where orphans and vulnerable children aged 5-13 years receive their primary education. We also provide older children enrolled in our program with access to secondary education and vocational training. In addition to providing primary and secondary education, Children of Uganda also supports children with disabilities at our Philip's House facility on the grounds of our Kiwanga home in the Mukono district. Over 600 children currently benefit from our education and support programs in Uganda.
This program helps families affected by HIV/AIDS improve their socioeconomic status and access HIV/AIDS services. Through counseling, social support and education, Children of Uganda equips families with the socioeconomic skills necessary for economic development, including business planning, micro-financial and management skills, and helps HIV-affected families access HIV/AIDS services, including testing and treatment for opportunistic infections.
This program provides families affected by HIV/AIDS with access to information and treatment support. Specifically, Children of Uganda enables HIV+ children to access highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART), food supplements, routine medical treatment, and counseling in an effort to help these children cope with their disease and lead happy, productive lives. In addition, this program also provides support to HIV+ women through counseling, guidance and treatment services, as well as sexual and reproductive health education to adolescents.
Under this program, Children of Uganda conducts biennial tours to the USA with a music and cultural dance troupe comprised of children enrolled in our programs in Uganda. Through theater, music, dance and drama, these young people aim to raise global awareness of the effects of HIV/AIDS on children in developing nations around the world and advocate for international assistance to end the devastating effects of AIDS on children.
Philip's House was established in 2002 and is located on the grounds of our Kiwanga children's home. This program provides basic living requirements, health services, physiotherapy and education to children with mental and physical disabilities. Philip's House is currently home to ten children, five girls and five boys, with varied mental and physical disabilities. In general, children living in Uganda who have mental and physical challenges are rejected and discriminated against by relatives and society. A combination of society's ignorance, superstition and unfairness due to the children's mental impairments often creates a harsh living environment for these special young people, making it difficult for them to achieve their full potential.
In 2002, Jan Smart, our Board Vice-Chair, donated funds in memory of her late brother, Philip, who had been disabled. These funds were used to construct and furnish a housing facility on the grounds of our Kiwanga home for children with mental and physical disabilities. The result was Philip's House, a home with two bedrooms - one for girls and one for boys - two classroom blocks, a kitchen, a store room, a bathroom and a locally constructed toilet. A staff of trained individuals care for children at this home and provide physiotherapy, basic education, recreation, and counseling to these special young people. At Philip's House, children with disabilities receive the psychological support and physical care they need to achieve their full potential and feel accepted by society.
